Elevator?

Why do we call these contraptions elevators when we use them not only to go to a higher level, to be elevated, but to also descend to lower levels?

Maybe the assumption is that what goes up, must come down. Therefore, by simply calling it an elevator, it is implied that someone will use it to both go up and down. -Scott B.

Scott, clever solution. I am going to assume that that is what the inventor(s) of the elevator had in mind. It was starting to bother me there for a bit.

You are so funny sometimes.

I just know one thing - I don't ever want to be stuck in one.
